VSCA Region 3 Leadership Workshop

The 2010 VSCA Region 3 Leadership Workshop will be held at Massaponax High School, 8201 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, Virginia. VSCA member and non-member elementary, middle level and high schools throughout Region 3 and surrounding school divisions are invited to attend. The workshop has been designed to assist schools in developing leadership potential in students, to promote leadership learning, and to foster regional and statewide networking opportunities.  This workshop will also help to prepare students for leadership roles in the future by teaching essential skills.  REGISTRATION DEADLINE: March 1, 2010.

National Association of Secondary School Principals 94th Annual Convention

The 84th annual convention of the Virginia Student Councils Association is an excellent leadership learning opportunity for all school leaders at every school level (K-12). Over 600 students annually participate in leadership focused workshops, seminars, and training sessions that provide experiences in leadership and opportunities to practice the citizenship skills necessary for effective participation in our democratic society. Nationally recognized speakers and key local leaders address convention participants. Students will be energized and better prepared to actively engage others in their own school for a more effective SCA. Registration deadline: (EARLY BIRD-February 13, 2010)  February 26, 2010

School secretaries at every level are essential to a principal’s success and the positive climate of every school. This conference will provide the school secretary with valuable resources focused on such important topics as time management, organizational skills, and decision making. Featured speakers will provide strategies that help the school secretary positively impact school administration. This conference has recognized the value of the school secretary since 1986. April 27, 2010  Student Handbook and Code of Student Conduct Workshop

Williamsburg Marriott 50 Kingsmill Road Williamsburg, VA

The one-day workshop is for building level and central office administrators responsible for writing or revising Student Handbooks and/or Student Codes of Conduct in our public schools. Participants will be provided an overview of laws that impact student discipline as well as annual changes in state law that impact the operation of public schools. Participants will have an opportunity to examine a variety of student handbooks developed by other school divisions. The latest changes as a result of state actions, legal memorandums, checklists, and policy considerations will be discussed. Registration deadline: April 12, 2010

June 27-June 30, 2010    83rd Annual Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference & Exposition

The Hotel Roanoke, 110 Shenandoah Ave., Roanoke, VA

The four-day, flagship conference, co-sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education since 1927, provides middle and high school principals and assistant principals with opportunities to interact with DOE staff and be informed of state education priorities, new policies, and required administrative procedures for implementation. The conference features “best practices” that have been implemented in successful schools and provides general session speakers on the cutting edge of instructional leadership and public policy. A pre-conference School Law Clinic and Data Management Workshop for Principals is featured. The participants may receive one (1) to three (3) hours of graduate credit through Virginia Commonwealth University. Registration deadline:   June 16, 2010.

Make sure you take every tax deduction you're entitled to.  Look into free IRS publications for information on deductions for work-related education.  Some of the costs associated with attending the Summer Conference may be eligible for a tax deduction.  To qualify, a person must be registered for, and attend, the conference. 
Treasury Regulations, Subchapter A, Sec. 1.162-5 permits an income tax deduction for educational expenses (registration fees, cost of travel, meals and lodging) undertaken to: (1) maintain or improve skills required in one's employment or other trade or business, or (2) meet express requirements of an employer or a law imposed as a condition to retention of employment, job status or rate of compensation.  (See IRS Publication 970 (2009), available online at www.irs.gov/publications/p970/ch13.html.
